I’m throwing up some really, really raw stuff here, mostly out of wanting to rant as soon as possible.
One of the main things I loved about MLP: FiM is that even in a world where sentient small horses look mainly like colourful clones of each other, there was still a suprising amount of variety.
You saw fat ponies, thin ponies, tall, short, cute, ugly, weird, cool, dark, light, and anything in between.
I haven’t seen Equestria Girls besides the trailer. But so far, the marketable, fashionable monolook of the mane 6 with the same malformed barbie girl face is very disheartening for a show that’s supposed to be about the perils of high school.
In high school, girls were fat, awkward, different, disabled, tall, short, weird, scared, unusual, and RARELY WHITE, THIN AND IDEAL. We shouldn’t be making dolls about what little girls want to be. We should be making characters and stories about what little girls are going through, and who they really are.
Real high school girls have to go through illness and abuse and ridicule. That doesn’t mean it has to be dramatic and upsetting and triggering and depressive. But I think it’d be really cool to mention it in a respectful light.
I don’t think this would be a better interpretation, and I’m sure mine would make for a far more elaborate and long-winded plotline than what’s intended, or even what’s suitable for MLP stuff. But I think there’s been a missed opportunity to truly connect with young women in North America today. And that’s sad to me.
